c. 7th century BCE - 5th century CE

Classical Latin

The Latin alphabet evolved from the Etruscan alphabet (itself derived from Greek) around the 7th century BCE. Initially consisting of 21 letters, it expanded to 23 letters by classical times (A-Z minus J, U, and W, which were later additions). The letter A retained its form and sound from Greek Alpha. Latin became the foundation for Romance language alphabets including French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian, as well as many other modern writing systems.
